My mother has done variations of this treat over the years, ranging from beaten Jell-o and frozen Cool-Whip and layers
of canned fruit (pinching penny time) , or old-fashioned puddings made with cream and layers
made with sprinkles added, or the very elegant heavy cream and fruit
bars.
To make it fancy, she used to layer them in fancy parfait glasses(she had exactly five one for each of us) and freeze them, as a special family dessert. Presentation was everything, especially when pinching pennies(which she was a master at), but she also made it fun for us kids to do on hot days, hence the fun cups and sticks.
Feel free to experiment(just remember that certain fruits do not go with Jell-o...I goofed doing that one!).
While this dessert has a simple name, it is very, very good and very, very rich. Makes lots, I only make it when I can take most of it out of the house and away from my ability to eat too much of it.
This recipe originally called for the brisket to be cooked in tomato soup and mushroom or cream of celery soup but it is really good when fixed with the Texas Barbecue sauce.
I have never tried this recipe because I have developed a bias for Texas flavored barbecue but if it's as good as my other recipe it will also hit the spot.
This recipe is one my family got from an old family friend. He used this recipe to make barbecue sauce and sold the sauce in stores. He wouldn't release the recipe until he went out of the business. Once he finished with the business he gave the recipe to a few family friends. Hope you enjoy it as much as we have.
Based on experiences growing up and my own cooking experience I have decided that the women in my family are not always super excited about spending a lot of time cooking. As a result I have a pretty good collection of recipes that are quick to fix and which use ingredients that don't require a lot of preparation time. This recipe is one of those that fit the guidelines. Makes a good sized batch and makes good left overs.
Sweet zesty tea to keep warm on cold mornings.
Great for camping/hiking or just letting the kids get involved more with cooking.
Fun Pie that tastes like apples without all the peeling
